Spirit Airlines pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), hailed (18-Mar-09) an arbitration panel decision that orders Spirit management to abide by the current collective bargaining agreement. The ruling mandates that Spirit management allow pilots up to five days off (but no fewer than four days) between scheduled trips, which may last up to six days.

Effective immediately, Spirit Airlines passengers will be charged USD50 each way for sporting equipment, such as golf clubs, and overweight bags between 51 and 70 pounds. Fees on cancellations, ticket changes, pets and unaccompanied minors were also raised. Spirit Airlines stated the fee increases are being implemented to offset soaring fuel prices.
