Grupo Mexicana CEO Manuel Borja presented MexicanaLink, the group’s third airline, at an official ceremony attended by Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, Governor of the State of Jalisco Emilio González Márquez, Chairman of the Mexicana Board Gastón Azcárraga, representatives of the state government and the local business community.

The new carrier will have its hub at the Guadalajara airport and its launch will coincide with the reopening of the group’s maintenance base here.

Gastón Azcárraga said, “We are here today to witness the realization of two of our dreams for the immediate future: the launch of MexicanaLink and the reopening of our maintenance base in Guadalajara. Both projects are of strategic relevance and will play a key role in the consolidation of Mexicana on the domestic aviation market, while providing a solid base for our international operations.”

“Mexicana believes in Mexico. which is why the company has decided to invest in and expand its operating infrastructure as part of the business strategy we began implementing three years ago to help us remain competitive and offer our customers the best possible services.”

MexicanaLink will begin operating on 16-Mar. Initially, only flights from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta and Monterrey will be available, but additional routes are expected to be incorporated down the line.

In addition to providing domestic passengers with a wider choice of travel options, MexicanaLink will stimulate the economy of Jalisco by creating over 500 direct jobs and 1,000 related ones.

Manuel Borja said, “After discussing several alternatives, we decided on MexicanaLink as the name for our new carrier, because it’s modern, short and catchy, and transmits the intrinsic values of the brand, namely the concept of connectivity.”

MexicanaLink will begin operating with a fleet of two 50-seat new generation Bombardier CRJ-200s, small, high-performance planes that offer competitive advantages in terms of costs, coverage and maintenance. Two more aircraft will join the fleet in April and a further nine will be incorporated over time, giving a total of 13 aircraft to meet estimated annual demand of 800,000 passengers on these routes.

Additionally with the launch of MexicanaLink, Grupo Mexicana announced the reopening of its maintenance base in Guadalajara, which will serve as a hub for its new airline and complement the services currently rendered by its maintenance base at the Mexico City International Airport.
