Concession for new airline granted for Grupo Mexico

Communications and Transport Undersecretary Humberto TreviƱo and Grupo Mexicana CEO Manuel Borja announced that the group has won a concession to operate a new feeder airline that will complement the routes currently covered by Mexicana and Mexicana.

Grupo Mexicana CEO Manuel Borja said, “The company’s decision to bolster its operating infrastructure is part of the restructuring strategy we began implementing three years ago. It comes at a time when productive investment is critical in an industry that requires smart business plans and companies willing to undertake challenges that imply growth. Mexicana believes in Mexico and decisions like these confirm the confidence our company has in the country’s future.”

The new airline will reestablish domestic routes previously operated by low-cost airlines, several of which disappeared from the market in the latter part of 2008, but it will also enable the company to expand and consolidate its domestic passenger and cargo networks, complementing routes that are not currently cost-effective for Mexicana and Mexicana

Aside from the benefits it entails for passengers, the new airline will stimulate the economy, creating more than 500 direct jobs and 1,000 related sources of employment.

The new airline will make its debut in the very near future with flights from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta, Torreón, Veracruz, Monterrey, Chihuahua and Ciudad Juárez, among other routes.

Its fleet will be comprised of 13 new generation Bombardier CRJ-200s, operated under a pure lease agreement. These modern aircraft can seat up to 50 passengers and are extremely efficient from an operating standpoint, offering excellent competitive advantages in terms of costs, coverage and service.
